A New Look and a New Sound

Radio New Zealand Branding Changes

What is Happening?

Radio New Zealand is making some changes to its branding and the logos identifying its networks and services.

When is this Happening?

The new look for Radio New Zealand and its networks and services will be introduced from Monday 22nd January.

What Will Change?

New logos will be introduced for Radio New Zealand and its key networks and services.

A name change for National Radio and Concert FM networks will be introduced at the same time.

National Radio will become Radio New Zealand National

Concert FM becomes Radio New Zealand Concert.

The Radio New Zealand website will have a new look to reflect the branding changes.

Will Programmes Change?

There are no major changes to programmes or schedules for Radio New Zealand National or Radio New Zealand Concert as a result of the new branding.

Some presentation changes are required because of the name change for the Radio New Zealand National and Radio New Zealand Concert networks and some additional pre-recorded material will be broadcast to reinforce station identity.

What about the Bird Calls?

Radio New Zealand’s iconic bird calls will be heard more often on Radio New Zealand National and Radio New Zealand Concert.

The quality of the sound recordings has been enhanced and some spoken context will be provided for each individual call.

What Are The Sounds of New Zealand I keep Hearing?

In keeping with its role as the country’s national broadcaster, Radio New Zealand will be supplementing the traditional birdcalls with a broader range of the unique sounds which reflect New Zealand’s national identity.

Why Is Radio New Zealand Making the Changes?

While Radio New Zealand is recognised by most New Zealanders as one of the country’s most important cultural institutions, there are still a few people out there who confuse our radio networks with some of the commercial broadcasters.

Read our Public Service Broadcasting FAQ for more information.

That confusion is very much a product of our recent history, from the separation of public service and commercial radio in this country and the extraordinary growth and diversification of the radio market.

There is a clear need for Radio New Zealand networks and services to be identified under one umbrella, and for us to reassert the vital role of public service broadcasting in the most competitive radio broadcasting market in the world.

We’re looking to lift our profile and to clearly explain the public value of the unique service we provide as New Zealand’s national broadcaster.
