Semi-final Round II

18 Competitors 40 minutes maximum
5-6 June 2009
Queenstown Memorial Hall

A Two Caprices from Op 1 of Paganini by memory.
Judges will select only one for performance. Competitors will be notified of judge’s choice prior to semi-final Round II.

C At least two contrasting movements up to 20 minutes duration of the following Sonatas with Piano:

1. Beethoven Sonata No 5 in F, Op 24
2. Beethoven Sonata No 7 in C minor, Op 30 No 2
3. Beethoven Sonata No 8 in G major, Op 30 No 3
4. Beethoven Sonata No 10 in G major, Op 96
5. Brahms Sonata No 1 in G major, Op 78
6. Brahms Sonata No 2 in A major, Op 100
7. Brahms Sonata No 3 in D minor, Op 108
8. Debussy Sonata for Violin and Piano
9. Fauré Sonata in A major, Op 13
10. Franck Sonata in A major
11. Prokofieff Sonata No 1 in F minor
12. Prokofieff Sonata No 2 in D major
13. Ravel Sonata for Violin and Piano

D One virtuoso work of competitor’s own choice from the 19th or 20th century, (approx. 10 minutes duration).

Announcement of Round III Semi-finalists will be made at the conclusion of the final session on Saturday 6 June.

Background

The Michael Hill International Violin Competition aims to promote young violinists from all over the world who are launching their professional solo careers and are aspiring to establish themselves on the world stage; to recognise and encourage excellence and musical artistry, and to expand performance opportunities (including playing New Zealand repertoire).
