Michael Hill International Violin Competition

2011 Michael Hill International Violin Competition

The Michael Hill International Violin Competition aims to promote young violinists from all over the world who are launching their professional solo careers and are aspiring to establish themselves on the world stage; to recognise and encourage excellence and musical artistry, and to expand performance opportunities (including playing New Zealand repertoire).

The biennial competition is open to violinists of all nationalities aged 18-28, who apply in the first instance by recordings and CV. The top 18 violinists are selected by a panel of prominent New Zealand and Australian violinists and are flown to Queenstown for two semi-final rounds of unaccompanied and with piano works. The top 6 semi-finalists are advanced to the Chamber Music Round in Auckland’s Concert Chamber where they perform piano trios, and from there, the top 3 semi-finalists are advanced to the Final Round in the Auckland Town Hall, performing concerti with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.
