This concert comes from the St Petersburg String Quartet with Alexander Mekinulov (piano) who perform Shostakovich’s String Quartet No 12 Op 133, Debussy’s String Quartet Op 10 and Schumann’s Piano Quintet Op 44 and Piano Quartet Op 47.
Music Mountain is the home of the oldest continuing summer chamber music festival in America. It began in 1930 as the permanent home for the Gordon String Quartet, one of the leading string quartets of its time. Each season sees a Chamber Music Series of 16 concerts, mainly on Sunday afternoons, a popular Saturday evening series of Jazz and Choral concerts, and a number of special events.
The centerpiece is Gordon Hall - one of the finest chamber music facilities in the United States. With seating for 335 and legendary acoustics, Gordon Hall provides resonant and lovely sound, views of the gardens, grounds and hills from every seat or from the lawn, permitting listeners to savour music and nature as one.
Gordon Hall and the Music Mountain residences were built by Sears Roebuck during the summer of 1930. The property and the buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
This series was supplied to Radio New Zealand Concert by WFMT
