Johnston, Calvert, Whitehead, Nock (world première), Hogan, A. Ritchie & Ross (world première)
In ths special Music Alive marking New Zealand Music Week you can hear a concert from New Zealand’s leading guitarist, Matthew Marshall, in a programme of works for solo guitar by New Zealand composers, including two world premières.
Marshall successfully combines his busy soloist career with his academic position as Professor & Dean of the School of Creative Arts at central Queensland University. He studied in New Zealand and England with William Bower, John Mills and Gordon Crosskey and, most recently, with David Leisner in the USA. In 1988 he was runner-up in the TVNZ Young Musicians Competition, a recipient of an AGC Young Achievers Award and the UDC/Rotary Young Musicians Prize in 1989. He also won prizes in the Royal Overseas League Music Competition in London in 1990 and Australia-New Zealand Foundation Awards in 1991 and 1995.
Marshall has also released three CD's: Legends of Fire, Sentimental Scenes and From the Madhouse. A strong advocate for New Zealand guitar music, he has had more than 30 works written for, or premièred by him. He gave the first performance of David Farquhar’s Guitar Concerto in 1993 in Wellington as well as subsequent performances in Mexico.
In 1998 he gave the world première performance of Anthony Ritchie's Guitar Concerto with the Auckland Philharmonia. In 2002 he gave the premiere performance of Philip Norman’s Concertino for Guitar and Strings in Russia and Patrick Shepherd’s Concerto for Flute & Guitar in Germany
