Verdi kept copies of the Italian translations of Shakespeare’s plays close to his bedside at his Villa Sant’Agata, and was steeped in many plays that he had no intention of turning into operas. But his collaboration with the brilliant young librettist Arrigo Boito spurred him on to set two final Shakespeare plays.
