Composer of the Week
9:00 AM Today
JEAN SIBELIUS (1865-1957)
"Music is for me like a beautiful mosaic which God has put together. He takes all the pieces in his hand, throws them into the world, and we have to recreate the picture from the pieces" (Jean Sibelius, 1905)
We celebrate the quintessentially Finnish composer's 150th birthday in 2015 with a selection of the works he pieced together during his career

Luigi Boccherini (1743 - 1805)
9am Sunday 25 March and 7pm Monday 26 March 2012
Boccherini’s birth date of 1743 puts him halfway between Haydn and Mozart in age and in our estimation of composers of the classical era he is completely overshadowed by them. Partly this is due to the instrumental forces he tended to write for – he composed hundreds of chamber works: sonatas, trios, quartets, quintets (especially), sextets. And the cello was his primary focus. He was not the symphonist that either Haydn or Mozart were and he wrote only one opera, and that was really a zarzuela rather than a true opera. But he was a good composer.
Peter Hoar introduces the 18th century Italian composer.
Peter Hoar’s introduction draws on these references:
