With his adherence to tonal harmony and strong melody, the English composer George Lloyd has been often dismissed by the musical establishment.
His music can sometimes feel only a short step away from Eric Coates or any of the cavalcade of British Light Music composers. But as Lewis Foreman writes in Grove Dictionary, he is celebrated by many for just those attributes as being “an icon of anti-modernism.”
And above all, putting the lie to him being “light”, he was a symphonist and an opera composer and a serious one at that.
