Pierné is one of those composers whose popularity in their own lifetimes is not reflected by their recognition now.

For some, it has meant that they were overlooked while alive, but posthumously revered.

For Pierné, it’s the opposite.

A French, turn-of-the-century composer, who wrote in many genres and whose output far outstripped Ravel’s: in his lifetime, a respected organist, composer and conductor.

Michael Stewart takes a look at his musical achievements.
