African sounds

Nuru KaneExile – Nuru Kane

The third album from Senegalese singer and guitarist Nuru Kane is an eclectic mix of styles, including Moroccan trance, mbalax, reggae and, well, whatever else takes his fancy, really! His main instrument is the guimbri, a traditional three-stringed bass lute used by the Gnawa people of North and West Africa (Riverboat TUGCD 1068)

3ma – Ballaké SissMaoko, Driss el Maloumi, Rajery

Three musicians from across Africa – Mali, Morocco and Madagascar – come together to blend the sounds of their different stringed instruments, each one emblematic of the musician’s country. Ballaké Sissoko plays the kora, Driss el Maloumi the oud, and the valiha, a tubular zither, is played by Madagascan musician Rajery (Contrejour 200002)
