By 1824 Schubert was conscious that he could be a successor to Beethoven and that his works were paving a way towards a 'symphony in the grand style'.

The next year he began this great four-movement symphony in C major, during a summer walking tour among the inspiring lakes and mountains of the Gastein area of Upper Austria.

Recorded 10 September 2016 at the Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington by RNZ Concert.

Producer: David McCaw

Engineer: Graham Kennedy
