25 December - Christmas Special 2011

This year, William's selection includes mostly recent tracks running from mundane to musicianly from Michael Bublé, Justin Bieber, She & Him, The Bobs, Chris Colfer and Darren Criss from Glee, Carole King, Kristen Chenoweth, Exohxo, The Ruffled Feathers and Mindy Gledhill. As a little sub-programme in the middle, he ruminates on the Jewish influence on Christmas music and includes tracks from Mandy Patinkin, Howard Carter, Zee Avi, The Klezmonauts and John Zorn.

Merry Christmas from William and Tim. The next series starts in early March.

Series Three 2011

25 September - 27 November (10 programmes)

27 November

In his final programme for 2011 — apart from the Christmas Day special on the big day itself — William rounds up the marvels and oddities that missed out over the last months' programmes. Artists featured include John Wesley Harding, Bjork, The Bats and Florence and the Machine. Lindon Puffin and Maisey Rika do Anika Moa, Van Dyke Parks does Wall Street and there are also some footie field classics from the EMI collection, Rucks, Tries and Choruses. He finishes off with Brian Wilson doing Disney and the Von Trapp Children getting themselves in a Stephen Foster/Randy Newman muddle.

20 November

William looks at Dudley Benson's new release: Live Series: Volume One - a two-disc set containing recordings of his live shows 'The Awakening' and 'Forest'.

13 November

William takes a look at some of the newly remastered editions of Pink Floyd albums. He features tracks from The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother, Meddle and The Dark Side of the Moon.

Then, using tracks from MOJO Magazine's tributes to Pink Floyd and Ray Davies (performances by The Last Hurrah!! and Kevin Tihista), he segues to the new Deluxe Edition of Something Else by The Kinks.

6 November

William surveys the career of American songwriter Tom Waits, playing tracks from many of his old albums. Also included are tracks from Harry Partch, Captain Beefheart and Ken Nordine - each in some way an influence on Waits's style. The focus of the programme is the new album Bad As Me (Anti). And we wind up with Anne Sofie von Otter singing Take it with me from Mule Variations, because she's going to be visiting the country soon.

File them both under 'Crossover' maybe, but according to William one of these is exquisite and one execrable. Try and guess which is which:

Nigel Kennedy - The Four Elements (Sony)

Tori Amos - Night of the Hunters (DG)

Other tracks used in the programme: Kennedy's debut recording of Elgar's Violin Concerto; Boy George singing Nick Drake's River Man from Nige's 2008 release Shhh!; Charles-Valentin Alkan's Prelude Op 31 No 8 played by Martin Laurent; and Della Reese performing the Tchaikovsky rip-off The Story of a Starry Night.

16 October

William looks back at some highlights in the career of American guitarist and songwriter Ry Cooder. He includes tracks from previous albums Ry Cooder, Jazz and My Name is Buddy and some of his session work with Paul Revere & The Raiders, John Braden, Taj Mahal, Phil Ochs and The Pahinui Bros.

All, of course, as background to Cooder's new album Pull Up Some Dust and Sit Down.

9 October

Three new releases:

June Tabor and Oysterband - Ragged Kingdom (Topic)

Kate Bush - Director's Cut (Fish People)

St Vincent - Strange Mercy (4AD)

As usual William explores previous work by these three artists. In particular, the Kate Bush album reworks songs from her previous albums The Red Shoes and The Sensual World and William plays back-to-back versions of the two title tracks.

25 September

William opens the programme with Leland, the singing green monster puppet film critic (aka Alex Thaler) singing his review of Scott Cooper's 2009 film Crazy Heart starring Jeff Bridges. This introduces three new releases from grizzled oldies:

Jeff Bridges - (self-titled album) [Ramp/Blue Note]

Tom Russell - Mesabi [Shout Factory/Proper]

Nick Lowe - The Old Magic [Proper]

William Dart's Track Record

listener_new_horizons

New Horizons has been on air for over thirty years. Its first broadcast in April 1980 was heralded by a cover on the New Zealand Listener. The albums featured on that cover - albums by Ry Cooder, XTC, The Kinks and Ray Davies, Sparks, Randy Newman, Lou Reed, Joni Mitchell, Elvis Costello and Jonathan Richman - were chosen by William. The artists have mostly continued to have flourishing careers and have been featured many times on the programme over the years. It just goes to show that William knows how to pick'em.
