Brooklyn band Grizzly Bear's latest album Painted Ruins is a set of eleven songs that aim at directness and simplicity after the comparative intensity of previous outings.

Guitarist Daniel Rossen has talked about the way their 2012 album Shields ended up being kind of dark and moody, and it was a place they wanted to move on from.

But Painted Ruins shows that the band hasn't lost its knack for layering - both with sound and intentions. William Dart calls this one 'superb'.
