Born in Blenheim in 1952, Gary Wilby has been actively involved in the teaching and promotion of classical music around Wellington and the Hutt Valley for many years. He graduated with an MA in Music from the University of Canterbury in 1976, and has been a cellist since 1980 with Nova Strings and since 1986 with Wellington Chamber Orchestra. Gary has written for Canzona and Art New Zealand and has attended music festivals in Warsaw, Helsinki and Tokyo.

Composed in 1989, and published by WY Music, the 'Five Bagatelles for Piano' by Gary Wilby have since been played by many young pianists, appeared in competitions and also performed by Timothy Evans in the CANZ 1990 Concert Series in Auckland that year. As reviewer Sally Hume noted, each of the five appropriately titled pieces show tonal, rhythmic and dynamic variety and character.
