Peter Scholes is a conductor, composer, and clarinettist based in Auckland. He was Founder (1999) and is currently Musical Director of the Auckland Chamber Orchestra. He has conducted all the professional New Zealand Orchestras as well as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Orion Orchestra and the Prague Symphony Orchestra. He was composer and conductor for a number of NZ feature films and has been commissioned by groups including the NZSO, the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Saint Matthew’s Chamber Orchestra, CadeNZa, Chamber Music New Zealand.

'Sonata for Flute and Piano' was composed in 1995 for flutist Amanda Hollins and Richard Mapp, piano. Peter and Amanda were both members of the rock/classical fusion group "Avant Garage". They played chamber music together and were both principal players in the Auckland Philharmonia. The Sonata was commissioned by Amanda and Richard with funding from Creative New Zealand for an Australian and New Zealand tour. It is in three short movements.
