On New Year's Day 2010, Radio New Zealand Concert broadcasts Settling the Score. Christine Argyle, Robbie Ellis and Margaret Ogilvie present a countdown of your favourite pieces of the past year, starting at 8:00 a.m. and finishing with the Number One piece just before 8:00 p.m.
In the last Settling the Score, Beethoven and Bach had four works each in the Top 30 (including the mighty B minor Mass at No 4), but the list was comparatively light on Mozart. The music of Vaughan Williams took two of the top five spots; the Russians did comparatively poorly, represented by only Rachmaninov's Symphony No 2; while Górecki and Pärt held the fort for living composers.
2009 was a varied year in the New Zealand music scene. Did the NZSO's Sibelius Festival inspire new favourites from the grandfather of Finnish music, or has the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's Splendour Series done the same for Tchaikovsky? A year ago, Messiah had its all-time lowest placing of No 15 - have the Handel anniversary commemorations improved its chances, or will the public be more interested in Mendelssohn's music to wish him a happy 200th birthday? On that note, we can't forget that the musical world is gearing up to celebrate round-number birthdays for Chopin, Schumann, Mahler and Barber in 2010 - and neither can we forget about New Zealand composers' works, old and new.
All will be revealed on New Year's Day!
