With my soul torn part by my family tragedies, exacerbated by the failure of my work, I convinced myself that I would never again be consoled by Art, and I decided never to compose again.

And that might well have been the end of the career of Giuseppe Verdi. He might easily have been a one-opera composer, sliding into the margins of history. After returning from Genoa he seems to have stayed put in his apartment, reading novels and only going out to eat. But, one snowy day in January, as he was coming out of a shopping arcade, he bumped into a fellow named Merelli....
