From Upbeat, 1:00 pm on 4 December 2017

For the first time in twelve years the Gisborne International Music Competition has been won by a New Zealander:  Auckland violist Alexander McFarlane takes away the $10,000 top prize. It’s also the first time a violist has ever won the competition.   The runner-up was clarinetist Oliver Shermacher from Sydney and third place went to violinist Hahnsol Kim from New York.  Alexander MacFarlane is 22 and in the second year of studies at the Guildhall in London.
