"The trombone comes the closest to the human voice with its bent pitches, scoops and smears, and that very human quality is evident in everything that (James Weldon) Johnson wrote," says Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trombonist Chris Crenshaw. Crenshaw draws on his gospel roots to connect secular music to poetry in this sprawling suite based on the James Weldon Johnson poem (Murray Street Productions)

Tales from the Forbidden City - five programmes documenting this collaborative NZ-Chinese musical project

Last year, China's renowned ensemble the Forbidden City Chamber Orchestra joined with the New Zealand String Quartet to commission seven New Zealand and Chinese composers to write music for their ensembles. Radio NZ Concert's Kate Mead visited the project's headquarters in Beijing and spoke with the musicians and composers about their lives, their instruments, their music and the successes and challenges of this innovative project.

John Amis Composer Portraits

We pay tribute to the BBC broadcasting personality who died last year, aged 91, with this series made in 1981 and recently re-mastered. Known to many through the My Music panel game, John Amis visited this country several times and recorded programmes for Radio New Zealand on two occasions. His experience working with and interviewing hundreds of musicians and composers made him a witty contributor, admired for his phenomenal musical knowledge and his ability to drop into the programme an appropriate and often hilarious personal anecdote whenever called upon. While the spoken content is contemporary to the 1980s, Amis's personal associations with each of the composers make his comments still very relevant thirty years later

Amis knew this English composer well and had interviewed him several times before this programme, recorded in 1981. As a young man, Walton was accepted into the home of the illustrious Sitwell family, leading to his famous collaboration with Edith Sitwell in Façade (RNZ)
