Demers is an Organ Professor and Head of the Organ Program at Baylor University in Texas, where she teaches organ and courses in the organ curriculum. A native of Québec, she is rapidly becoming recognized as one of North America’s most virtuosic organists.

Her concert at the 2010 national convention of the American Guild of Organists, in Washington, D.C., was received with great acclaim not only by critics, who deemed it “one of the most outstanding events of the convention.” (The American Organist), but also by the standing-room-only audience, which called her back five times.

She began piano and organ study at age eleven at the Montréal Conservatory of Music. After graduation in 2003 she studied on scholarship for a year in Paris at the École Normale de Paris-Alfred Cortot. She received her Master’s and Doctoral degrees from The Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied with Paul Jacobs. Her dissertation – an analysis of Bach’s St. John Passion – was awarded the Richard French Prize for best dissertation at commencement. (Source: Isabelle Demers)

French composer Charles Gounod is best known for his opera Faust. Another opera occasionally still performed, is Roméo et Juliette. The romantic and melodious tragedy Roméo et Juliette,  based on the Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet, premiered in 1867.

“Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, in which the composer is always pleasing, though seldom impressive, might be described as the powerful drama of Romeo and Juliet reduced to the proportions of an eclogue for Juliet and Romeo. One remembers the work as a series of very pretty duets, varied by a sparkling waltz air for Juliet, in which Madame Patti displays that tragic genius, which belongs to her equally, with the highest capacity for comedy. [Vaccai's] Romeo e Giulietta is an admirable opera for Giulietta; in which Romeo is not forgotten.” Sutherland Edwards, music critic of the St. James's Gazette in 1867.

NZ Organ Week

CBC Ideas, Ode to the Organ

It's the world's largest, most complex and powerful musical instrument. The pipe organ lifts us out-of-the-ordinary and fills us with awe. From cathedrals to arenas, Eitan Cornfield pulls out all the stops to explain why organs still matter in our increasingly secular world. Eitan speaks to organists and organ lovers about their fascination with the instrument, including concert organists Gillian Weir, Cameron Carpenter, William O'Meara, former editor at The New York Times, Craig Whitney, Grand Court Organist of the Wannamaker Organ at Macy's in Philadelphia, Peter Richard Conte, historian Barbara Owen, and Jacquelin Rochete, Artistic Director of organ builders Casavant Frères (CBC)
