Moondog: The Viking of 6th Avenue

Bohemian, beatnik, beggar - the blind street musician Louis Hardin, who dressed as a Viking, was called many things. The name he gave himself was Moondog. He spent most of his time on the streets of New York playing music, composing, and handing out pamphlets of his poetry and musical philosophy. But inside the horned helmet was the mind of a serious composer. One writer describes his music as 'a unique amalgam of Amerindian percussion, jazzy riffing, European counterpoint and troubadour balladeering'.

Ryan Smith explores the weird and sometimes wild world of Moondog, the American street musician who became an iconic figure in New York and attracted the attention of the leading artists and musicians of the day (RNZ)

This programme features little-known mid-late 1940s Ellington compositions such as Magenta Haze, Lady of the Lavender Mist, and Air-Conditioned Jungle, as well as two sides from his short 1946 stay on the Musicraft label, a Carnegie Hall concert performance of the atonal/stride-piano The Clothed Woman, I Like the Sunrise from The Liberian Suite, and one of the few recorded numbers from the music Ellington wrote for the failed Broadway musical Beggar's Holiday. Lola Johnson

It was a tremendous programme which would have taxed the capabilities of the world's foremost pianists, but Lola Johnson sailed through it with an ease that amounted to nonchalance (Wairarapa Times Age, 1957)

The Wanganui-born pianist Lola Johnson was known from a young age for her glittering technique and innate musicality. Since her marriage at the age of 40 she's also been known as Lola Austin. Fifty-five years after she recorded the country's first classical piano LP the distinguished New Zealander was still performing and teaching. She talked with Peter Mechen (RNZ)

The Rake's Progress

A 1947 Chicago exhibition of William Hogarth's sequence of paintings depicting 'A Rake's Progress' inspired Stravinsky to compose an opera. With an English libretto by WH Auden & Chester Kallman, the work premièred at La Fenice in Venice in 1951. Now a 20th century classic, it's regularly revived and is our opera this coming Sunday from a concert performance presented by the Auckland Philharmonia with Eckehard Stier conducting.
