Solomon Islands Government confirms the resignation of two New Zealand advisors

4:47 pm on 8 January 2003

The Solomon Islands Government has confirmed that two New Zealand advisors who left the country suddenly after special constables shot at the Prime Minister's residence, have resigned their positions.

Lloyd Powell had been the permanent secretary in the Finance Ministry, while Rob Solomon worked as a special advisor to the PM's office.

They left on a chartered flight after the group of special constables shot at Sir Allen Kemakeza's house, in a successful attempt to extort more than a million dollars from the Government.

The New Zealand High Commission said at the time the duo found they were in taxing working conditions and accelerated their leave plans.

Powell had earlier reported having guns poked at him and knives pulled on him.

Special constables had also earlier threatened staff at the finance ministry and at the prime minister's office.

Edward Kingmele, the Prime Minister's advisor says the two, whose positions had been funded by AusAid, have now formally resigned.

He says the Government has not yet considered replacements.

Lloyd Powell had originally been employed as a consultant and Mr Kingmele says he may yet return to Honiara to complete the remaining two months of his contract.
