law makers in American Samoa to consider increasing their allowances

4:21 pm on 10 January 2003

An increase in the allowance for members of the Fono is likely to be discussed in the early days of the new legislature in American Samoa.

The topic has been raised at a Senate meeting by Senator Tuana'itau Tuia, but the Senate president Lutu Fuimaono said the discussion would have to wait until the Fono's new session.

The annual tax free allowance for legislators is 15-thousand US dollars while the Senate President and House Speaker receive 20-thousand dollars.

The allowances come on top of annual salaries for members of 25-thousand and 35-thousand dollars for the two leaders.
