A tropical cyclone alert is now also in force for Tonga.
The tropical depression is located about 600 kilometres northwest of Nukualofa.
Close to its centre winds are gusting up to 45 knots.
It is expected that a cyclone will develop in the next 24 to 36 hours.
There is a danger of damaging winds and floods in low lying areas.
