Fiji chief wants Suva land returned

3:56 am on 27 April 2002

Fiji's Senate has heard a call for the most valuable land in the country, upon which the capital Suva stands, to be returned to the paramount chief of the Rewa province, Adi Lady Lala Mara.

The call has been made by a government senator, Rewa high chief and vice-president of the ruling SDL Party, Ratu Josaia Rayawa.

Ratu Josaia told the Upper House that the Suva land rightly belongs to Adi Lady Lala, in her chiefly capacity as the Roko Tui Dreketi.

He said people are making millions and millions of dollars from the use of the land and he was asking the government to return it to the Roko Tui Dreketi.

Ratu Josaia said he was speaking on Adi Lady Lala's behalf in his traditional capacity.

He said there are only three voices in Rewa - that of the Roko Tui Dreketi, the Vunivalu of Rewa and himself as the Tui Noco.
