New flight boost to mail service in Marshall Islands

2:35 pm on 29 April 2002

A new US Postal Service mail charter flight to Guam could help alleviate pressure to move the Marshall Islands from being a domestic to an international designation.

The USPA claims it is losing millions of dollars providing mail service to the Marshalls at US domestic rates.

But government and business leaders in the Marshalls say the private sector relies heavily on the postal service to import goods from the US.

The new flight to Guam stops off to re-fuel in the Marshall's capital, Majuro, and it's hoped the flight can be used to transport mail to the Marshalls en route to Guam.
