Military police begin questioning three soldiers accused of murdering Theys Eluay

10:41 am on 30 April 2002

The defence lawyer for the three Indonesians accused of killing the Papuan separatist leader, Theys Eluay, has declined to name them but says they are all officers of the Kopassus elite force.

Military police have begun questioning them in Jakarta more than two weeks after they were detained over Chief Eluay's killing last November.

Military police have said the three will be accused of insubordination because there has never been any order from their superiors for the killing.

The suspects face a maximum sentence of 15 years in jail.
