Samoa's Chamber of Commerce optimistic about hotel developments

Despite a history of investors not carrying out proposed developments, Samoa's Chamber of Commerce president has a positive frame of mind about plans to develop the hotel industry.

Norman Wetzell says if a good sized resort or hotel is secured then the construction sector will have a good future.

There has been much publicity regarding a proposed resort on the man-made island at Taumeasina and now investors are also looking at Faleolo, near the airport.

While wary of the history of investors backing off after attracting attention and raising hopes, Mr Wetzell says everybody's keeping their fingers crossed that at least one of the investors will carry out the work they are planning.

He says he believes there are positive signs from the investors that are interested in doing a resort in Faleolo.

Mr Wetzell says other factors contributing to the current construction boom include the increasing number of bricklayers in the islands and the refurbishment of primary schools in the region, funded by the Asian Development Bank.
