Vanuatu's ruling coalition unofficially re-elected

5:20 pm on 6 May 2002

The two parties making up Vanuatu's caretaker administration, are now claiming 31 seats in the 52 member parliament following last week's election.

The formal counting process does not get underway until later this week, but the Vanua'aku Pati says it has 14 seats, and the backing of four independents, while the Union of Moderate Parties has 12 seats and the support of another independent.

The parties formed a governing coalition a year ago and signed a memorandum of understanding to continue it before the election.
