Vanuatu police say an arrest is imminent a month after a highly publicised attack on an expatriate businessman allegedly by a candidate in last week's elections.

Cafe owner Christophe Rodot says he was attacked and beaten by a mob of men after he had removed an election campaign poster which had been plastered over his menu board.

Mr Rodot says the mob forced him to eat the poster after it had been soaked in muddy water.

Mr Rodot says the candidate, Willie Kaloris, then threatened him with expulsion from the country once he was elected.

Mr Kaloris, who according to unofficial results was unsuccessful in the poll, then allegedly extorted money from Mr Rodot and his fiance.

The attack came amid calls from other aspiring politicians that Vanuatu should rid itself of foreign influence and kick expatriates out of the country.

Police superintendent Eric Pakoa says the attack, which happened on April 8th, was the worst incident of pre-election violence.

He says there will be an arrest shortly and explains why there has been a delay.

"The complaints are not formerly launched through to statements, so we need statements, that we could base our interviews on,and to - before we can make our arrests, and thats one of the delays."
