Calls to review travel advisories about Solomon Islands

There have been calls in Solomon Islands for travel advisories to be reviewed following a police statement that New Zealand diplomat, Bridget Nichols, was probably the victim of an accident.

She died of a stabbing wound at her residence in Honiara, fuelling speculation that she was killed in an opportunistic crime.

Her death led to renewed warnings by New Zealand against non-essential travel to Solomon Islands and prompted a security review.

Tourism operators say the advisories should be revisited while the Solomon Islands foreign secretary, Warren Paia, says he questions why New Zealand maintains its warnings.

"Other countries have reduced their risk ratings for Solomon Islands and we do not see why the travel advice should be framed that way at the moment. So it is something that is a puzzle to us."
