Solomon Islands rules out foreign force to help disarm militants

9:21 am on 24 May 2002

The Solomon Islands police minister, Benjamin Una, has ruled out that a foreign force will be invited to disarm those who defy the gun amnesty deadline.

May the 31st is the latest date to return stolen weapons and property to qualify for the amnesty.

He says Solomon Islands does not need a foreign intervention to handle its gun problem but needs commitment by the police to restore law and order.

Mr Una says those defying the gun amnesty will be prosecuted.

Police holding guns illegally have been directed to return them this morning.
