Fiji employers concerned about possible sanctions

1:13 pm on 27 May 2002

The Fiji Employers Federation has expressed concern that any sanctions imposed on the country by overseas unions will work against thousands of school leavers who are trying to enter the work force.

The federation president, David Aidney, says billion-dollar projects and investments which promise to absorb school leavers will be shelved if Australian unions impose sanctions on Fiji.

Mr Aidney says Fiji has opportunities waiting but the country would be held to ransom if sanctions are imposed.

His comments follow a report that Australian unions have agreed to impose sanctions on sea and air links to Fiji because the state-owned Airports Fiji Limited has not given recognition to the Fiji Public Servants Association..

Mr Aidney says the situation surrounding AFL has dragged on too long and dialogue is needed to settle it.
