Journalists on strike in New Caledonia

5:17 pm on 28 May 2002

The majority of journalists at the state broadcasting station RFO in New Caledonia have been on strike since Monday over ongoing technical problems.

The journalists and some technicians had already stopped work twice, on the 15th and 16th May, to express their exasperation over the problems which they say affect both radio and television broadcasts.

They're also striking over action taken against them for the two day stoppage after the regional director of the station, Alain Le Garrec, noted the disruption in their files.

A spokesperson for the journalists, Alain Petit, says they want to better serve their listeners and viewers and the technical issues haven't been resolved despite the problems recurring for some months.

The strike has forced the cancellation of some radio and television programmes.
