In American Samoa a new Government agency has been created to take charge of homeland security.

The Territorial Office of Homeland Security will be a division of the Governor's office and will be headed by the Governor's Special Assistant Leiataua Birdsall Alailima.

The agency will bring the Territory into line with other US states and territories and will open the way for millions of dollars in federal funding to combat terrorism.

Among its duties will be the development of a homeland security plan, work with frontline responders on enhancing security, and identifing and negotiating federal, state and community resources for the implementing of security projects and monitoring the territory's readiness to respond to disasters.
