New Zealand looking at front line police support in Solomons

9:10 am on 8 June 2002

New Zealand may send a team of front line police to shadow their colleagues in the troubled Royal Solomon Islands force.

Since a coup two years ago the Solomon police force has been compromised by the close association of some officers with the coup makers.

This has reduced commitment and capacity in the force, sparking a surge in lawlessness.

The New Zealand and Australian Foreign Ministers meeting in Canberra have

reiterated their commitment to work together to restore the Solomons police.

For several years Australia has been endeavouring to build long term capacity in the force, and New Zealand's Foreign Minister Phil Goff says New Zealand plans to focus on shorter term operational improvements.

"it means working directly alongside front line police officers and NCOs giving them the support and advice they need but not taking over their responsibility to do the job."
