PNG's Forest Authority embroiled in more controversy

3:36 pm on 10 June 2002

The Managing Director of Papua New Guinea's Forest Authority has been accused of misusing public funds over an advertisement that appeared in newspapers last week.

The ad defended the appointment of David Nelson to head the Forest Authority and was printed under the Authority logo, but also contained an endorsement by a member of the Forest Owners Association.

The campaign group, Forest Watch, wants to know why the Forest Authority, as a government agency, is funding an ad that gives publicity to a forest industry group.

The National Forest Board, which is an umbrella group, along with the Prime Minister, is currently challenging Mr Nelson's appointment through the courts.
