American Samoan call for US to be given more rights in territory's judicial matters

There has been a call in American Samoa for the US federal government to be given jurisdiction over the territory on a case by case basis.

The call was made by Fagafaga Daniel Langkilde, who was a candidate in last year's election for the US Congress.

American Samoa is the only US territory without a US Federal court but courts in Hawaii or Washington hear cases of American Samoans charged with federal crimes.

Fagafaga says he favours US federal intervention in territorial affairs if federal funds and laws are involved.

He says this would keep people honest and provide a good check and balance.
