PNG Media Council joins calls for Election Commissioner to face the public

The Papua New Guinea Media Council has condemned the Electoral Commissioner for not fronting up to the public to explain the chaotic start to the elections.

Irregulaties in the common rolls and administrative problems have been blamed for the violence and chaos which has occurred since the poll started on Saturday.

The President of the Media Council, Peter Aitsi, says there is growing public discontent over the lack of comment from the Commissioner, Reuben Kaiulo.

"He's left the response to his various provincial election officers and unfortunately they've coped the brunt of the public's annoyance so at this stage the Electoral Commissioner himself has not publicy come out and made any comment or made any statement in relation to the problems that we've faced within the first days of polling. So it's disappointing from the public's point of view, I think it's in the interest of the Electoral Comissioner to come out and give us some clear information as to why we face these issues considering that we had so much time to plan."
