Fiji police investigation clears police officers of alleged Mafia links

8:22 am on 22 June 2002

Several senior Fiji police officers alleged to have been involved in criminal activities with the so-called Mafia Queen of Fiji have been cleared.

Radio FM-96 says an internal police investigation failed to find sufficient evidence against the officers.

They were alleged to have allowed the Mafia Queen to operate gambling and prostitution rackets and print counterfeit currency.

The authorities ordered the deportation of the Mafia Queen, a Chinese national, but officials have not been able to enforce the order because she is allegedly protected by people holding high office.
