An Indonesian newspaper says the government is withholding information about the trial of nine Kopassus soldiers accused of assassinating the Papuan leader Theys Eluay.

The Editor of the Jakarta Post, Ridwan Sijabat, says the only information available is that the trial will take place in July in the Higher Military Court which is used to try cases involving mid-ranking officers.

Mr Sijabat says the armed forces commander, Endriartono Sutarto, has declined to reveal who the soldiers are or confirm a trial date.

Mr Sijabat says the National Army commander is trying to distance himself from the trial due to officers being implicated in chief Eluay's murder.

"Maybe he supposed to be clean of the case, and to impress the public that he didn't interfere in the case the investigation, several of the suspects are middle-rank officers who were responsible for Theys murder."
