Results trickle in from Papua New Guinea general election

Results from electorates in Papua New Guinea continue to trickle in as voting is in its second week.

The National Alliance candidate, Bart Philemon, has won the Lae Open seat, but the party's candidate in the Manus seat, Stephen Pokawin, was beaten by Dr Jacob Jumagot, in what is seen as a major upset.

In Port Moresby prime minister, Sir Mekere Morauta has held his North West seat while Melanesian Alliance candidate Lady Carol Kidu has retained Moresby South.

Peter Niesi reports that two results are due shortly in the capital area, with a former prime minister in the lead.

"Bill Skate's still leading the tally on the inner city provincial seat and Caspar Wollum is still leading the Moresby Northeast, but there's continued feeling that Philip Taku is in striking distance, but whether he manages to bridge the gap that's been left there remains to be seen."
