Solomons police commissioner says new crackdown on crime gets results

10:38 am on 2 July 2002

The Solomon Islands police commissioner Morton Sireheti says they are still working out how to recover illegal weapons in the community.

Despite the end of an amnesty five weeks ago hundreds of guns stolen from police armouries remain unaccounted for.

The Commissioner says a crackdown on crime in Honiara launched last week is targeting those who use guns for criminal purposes.

Mr Sireheti says during Operation Pistol there are round the clock foot and mobile patrols in the capital.

And he says it is already having an effect.

"Our police officers are doing a lot of good work, in fact they have retrieved during the weekend one SR-88 military weapon and have located or collected other stolen properties."
