130 people stranded at sea in Solomons

3:48 pm on 4 July 2002

The Solomon Islands Rescue Service has dispatched a boat to rescue 130 people who have been stranded on a disabled ferry for four days.

The ship, the Endeavour Two, had been on a journey from the Te Motu provincial centre Lata to Honiara when it developed engine problems.

The news editor at the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation, Alfred Inomae, says it has been adrift since then.

He says the government has assured people that those on board will shortly be rescued by a police patrol boat.

"the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Works and Transport..he is assuring the relatives and the friends of those onboard - 130 of them including the crew - that the patrol boat will soon get to them and probably take them on board to safety.....he says those on board are well."
