5:22 pm on 9 July 2002

Fiji's Labour Minister says he is confident that the Aviation Workers Union will call off its planned strike after two days of arbitration meetings with Air Pacific.

Mr Zinck says the union has shown enough goodwill during the talks that he is confident a planned strike this Friday can be avoided.

He says this is indicated by the union dropping from the discussions an issue that has been outstanding for four years.

The Fiji Aviation Workers Union are threatening to strike on the eve of the 78 nation, African, Caribbean, Pacific Summit in Nadi.

The Labour Minister says the aviation workers union must drop it's threat to strike if it wants to continue arbitration with Air Pacific.

"we've already spoken to a few of their members and executive who are quite confident for the arbitrator to actually process their demands and applications ..ah...the strike notice has to be taken off ..that is perhaps a prerequisite of the process being ongoing"

Fiji Labour Minister, Kenneth Zinck

Attar Singh, the Secretary for the Aviation Worker's Union says an union meeting will be held tomorrow to decide whether or not to go ahead with the strike.
