Fiji's New labour Unity Party not to merge into Democrats

2:56 pm on 9 July 2002

Fiji's New Labour Unity Party says it is not about to merge into the new political party.

An earlier report said the Fijian Political Party, the SVT; the Fijian Association Party, the FAP; and New Labour would merge to form the Fiji Democratic Party.

But New Labour's president, Ratu Meli Vesikula, says while they back the move to form a grand coalition of all parties which do not support racial discrimination, the NLUP intends to maintain its constitutional independence.

Ratu Meli says they stand ready to discuss the formation of a grand coalition once the Fiji Democratic Party is established.

The SVT and the FAP have confirmed being part of moves to form the Party which would address the interests of all racial groups.

The SVT would be disbanded at its annual convention next month to pave the way for the new party.
