10:34 am on 11 July 2002

The United States National Marine Fisheries Service is holding workshops in American Samoa to teach fishermen how to save protected species.

The accidental catch of turtles, whales, sea birds and other protected species by longline fishermen is a growing international issue.

The workshops will teach the fishermen ways to avoid catching such species.

Under planned new regulations it is compulsory for fishing vessel operators to attend such a workshop.
