Guam without power after Typhoon Halong

4:55 pm on 11 July 2002

The United States Territory of Guam is without electricity and most water supplies are unusable in the wake of the second Typhoon in five days.

Typhoon Halong swept close to the island overnight, but emergency officials say they are not yet able to fully assess its impact.

However they say that three thousand people remain in shelters.

Halong followed Typhoon Chata'an which caused considerable damage in Guam.

It had earlier swept across Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia, leaving more than 40 people dead.
