Nearly half the seats declared in PNG elections

Nearly half of the 109 seats in the PNG Parliament have now been declared.

Of the 49 seats declared, the National Alliance headed by Sir Michael Somare, has eight, the People's Demcratic Movement of Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta has seven and the People's Progressive Party, six.

There are also six successful independent candidates so far, with the remaining seats split between another 14 parties.

One of those, the Pangu Pati, which is headed by another former Prime Minister, Sir Rabbie Namaliu, has put out a statement saying it is not in talks with the National Alliance over the formation of a coalition.

The National Alliance claimed earlier this week it was confident of forming a coalition Government after holding discussions with the PPP and Pangu.

The Pangu Pati denies this saying it remains committed to Sir Mekere Morauta's coalition which formed the outgoing administration.
