Inquiry planned into Solomons ethnic tension and its aftermath

4:52 pm on 12 July 2002

The Solomon Islands Government is considering setting up a commission of inquiry into the ethnic tension of two years ago and the controversial payments made last year for lost or stolen property.

It will also look at the alleged massacre on the Weather Coast last month.

This report from George Atkin in Honiara.

".government sources say four people have been identified to conduct the Commission but finance to carry it out is still to be secured. former Police commissioner, British born Australian, Frank Short, is being considered to chair theCommission, while two bishops and a lawyer from the Attorney General's chambers are to become commissioners...the sources believe that New Zealand and Australia have been approached to fund the inquiry...no other details are known."
